Caravaggio: The Soul and the Blood

West Coast Premiere of the documentary about the life, works and struggles of Michelangelo Merisi from Caravaggio, whose existence, as well as his art, was marked by lights and shadows, genius and intemperance.

Introduction by Jon R. Snyder, Professor of Italian Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Prof. Snyder has published and lectured extensively on the literatures, arts and cultures of early modern Europe, especially Italy. Among his books are L’estetica del Barocco (The Aesthetics of the Baroque, Il Mulino, 2005) which takes the Baroque to be the first global artistic movement, in which revolutionary new ways of representing and narrating sensual and spiritual experience were developed and disseminated on a large scale.
