Beginning to see the light. The quality of design that illuminates

The keynote speaker of this year’s Italian Design Day in Los Angeles will be the internationally renowned architect Roberto Palomba (Studio Palomba Serafini Associati). His presentation on the topic of quality in design as an ‘enlightening’ factor of sustainable and responsible development will be followed by a roundtable on “A holistic vision of modern architecture, light, and design” moderated by Carlo Caccavale, Hon. AIA | LA Executive Director, featuring Anthony Morey, Vice President of Design & Strategy of Luminaire, and Susan Chang AIA, IIDA and partner of Shimoda Design Group.

The program will include welcome remarks by the Consul General of Italy in Los Angeles, Raffaella Valentini, the Italian Trade Commissioner, Alessandra Rainaldi, and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles, Emanuele Amendola.

A networking event will follow.

The 2023 Italian Design Day is promoted and organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Culture, with the contribution of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

Roberto Palomba Architect and designer, founder of Palomba Serafini Associati
Roberto Palomba, architect and designer internationally renowned, lives and works in Milan. In 1994 he founded with Ludovica Serafini – Palomba Serafini Associati; the studio develops interior/exhibit/industrial design and architecture projects worldwide. He is a strategic consultant and art director for several historical design companies, collaborating with leading international brands (Boffi, Cappellini, Foscarini, Kartell, Zanotta, Zucchetti among many). He has been a lecturer at the Polytechnic of Milan (Degree in Industrial Design). He has been awarded with numerous international recognitions, such as Compasso D’Oro (Italy).

 

Carlo Caccavale Hon. AIA|LA – Executive Director, AIA Los Angeles
Carlo Caccavale brings 17 years of experience at the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles chapter to his position as its Executive Director. Carlo has initiated a number of AIA|LA conferences that contribute to the profession and surrounding region, including Encompass, the AIA|LA Conference to Actualize Diversity and Inclusion; Design for Dignity, the AIA|LA conference focused on homelessness and housing affordability; and Powerful, Women Leading Design. To widen the spectrum of offices participating in design awards programs, Carlo launched the Restaurant Design Awards in 2005 and the Residential Architecture Awards in 2016. In 2017, he started the chapter’s Architectural Photography Awards.

 

Susan Chang AIA, IIDA and partner of Shimoda Design Group
Susan Chang is a partner and founding member of Shimoda Design Group, a boutique studio specializing in bespoke design solutions for leading companies across the US. She is an architect, interior designer, builder and a workplace strategist with a multidisciplinary design practice. Under her leadership, the studio work is diverse with a common strength in its narrative unique to each client and company brand experience. In 2000, Joey Shimoda and Susan Chang founded Shimoda Design Group at a live/work warehouse in the burgeoning Arts district of downtown Los Angeles. The firm has gained a reputation for innovative workplace interiors, history-conscious building renovations, and bold creative mixed-use campuses. Their bespoke approach to design is captured by the firm’s moniker Extra Superfino (“extra super fine”), working for Bloomberg Inc., Rolex USA, Steelcase Inc., Tishman-Speyer, and Kilroy Realty Corp.

 

Anthony Morey Vice President of Design & Strategy of Luminaire
Anthony Morey is a design leader with over 15 years of experience and a track record of delivering award winning design solutions. His expertise spans various sectors, leading design teams, developing museum exhibits, and designing educational programs for students, integrating design into every aspect of an organization’s strategy. At Luminaire, Anthony spearheaded a complete brand refresh, leading the development of a new visual identity and brand guidelines that set the stage for a successful product launch. He previously conceptualized and executed several groundbreaking exhibitions at the A+D Museum. Anthony is also committed to giving back to the community through design mentorship programs and serving non-profit organizations.
