On May 13, 1939, the German transatlantic liner St. Louis embarks from Hamburg towards Cuba. There are 937 Jews on board fleeing Nazi madness. It is the moment before the world engages in the bloodiest war in human history. Gustav Schröder, a German commander, has charge of the ship. The Captain detests Hitler and the destruction he is wreaking on Germany and, soon, to the whole of Europe. The passengers' hopes are dashed in Cuba as they prepare to debark: there is a newly imposed tax that only 29 of them can pay. Havana turns the ship away, sending it towards the coast of the United States. The St. Louis will not find shelter even in the United States of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, or in Canada. Captain Schröder is forced to go back to Europe, but determines not to go back to Germany first. Hopes are raised for placement with the host nations of Belgium, Holland, Great Britain and France. As Nazi Germany is preparing to invade Europe, the epilogue will be devastating for many of the passengers aboard the St. Louis. Graphic novel by Sara Dellabella, author, and Alessio Lo Manto, artist.
