In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Consulate General of Italy & the Italian Cultural Institute in Los Angeles organize a special screening of Womeness by Yvonne Scio.
Through the stories of five extraordinary women, Womeness offers a portrait of female identity, resilience, and the evolution of feminism. The film unfolds in two parallel narratives: on one side, artist Tomaso Binga, author Dacia Maraini, and politcian Emma Bonino—three women who lived through the formidable season of Italian feminism—reflect on the battles fought, the victories won, and the challenges that remain. On the other side of the story—and the world—are the lives of Setsuko Klossowska de Rola and Sussan Deyhim. Setsuko defied societal prejudices by following the painter Balthus to Italy, embracing what became her silent revolution. Sussan, through music and performance, turns art into resistance, amplifying the voices of women from Iran and beyond in their fight to reclaim control over their bodies.
Following the screening, filmmaker Yvonne Sciò will join Madeline Di Nonno (President and CEO, Geena Davis Institute) and Frank Scherma (President and co-founder, RadicalMedia) for a panel discussion moderated by Jeremy Spiegel (Executive Producer, Warner Brothers Discovery), exploring how film and media can shape gender narratives and foster allyship.
The evening will conclude with a DJ set by Lorenza Calamandrei, composer of the music included in Womeness.
