BLACK SUNDAY / BLACK SABBATH
In conjunction with LA Opera’s presentation of Hercules Vs. Vampires, April 23 – 26 at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the American Cinematheque will screen a pair of Mario Bava classics: BLACK SUNDAY and BLACK SABBATH. Whether it’s ancient strongmen, vampires or witches, the famed Italian horror director brings them to life with operatic sweep and plenty of nightmarish atmosphere. Following BLACK SUNDAY is a screening of: “The Mill at Calder’s End,” 2015, 14 min. Dir. Kevin McTurk. This gothic tale, inspired by the films of Mario Bava and Hammer Studios, is told with the use of 36-inch-tall bunraku rod puppets, operated by puppeteers dressed in black. In the remote village of Calder’s End stands an old windmill, a repository of dark secrets to which Nicholas Grimshaw has returned, intent on breaking an ancient family curse. Featuring the voices of Barbara Steele and Jason Flemyng. Introduction by composer Patrick Morganelli, followed by a discussion on BLACK SUNDAY with actress Barbara Steele and author David Del Valle.
