Conspicuous Consumption: Renaissance Venice in the Eyes of Foreigners

Dressing in the Venetian mode – narrow-cut breeches and a padded doublet—was often the sine qua non for visitors coming to Venice from Germany, France and England—and they came with a precise shopping list of the clothes to buy. This presentation looks at how albums of images compiled by young foreigners studying in Italian universities during the Renaissance make us understand how clothes could foster a notion of selfhood, define social classes, and participate in forming national identities in ancien régime Europe.
