Andrea Mammone: Europe Today

Europe Today: An Austere and Nationalist Portrait

Starting from the 2007-2008 western financial troubles, the process of European integration has been threatened. The growth of anti-EU and nationalist forces is pushing governments to doubt the value of European membership, and a portion of national electorates blames the EU institutions and the euro currency for unemployment. Some even believe that the EU is doomed to rapid failure. This talk will explore the present political and social situation in the European continent, in an era where “austerity”, “refugees,” and the “far right” are often associated with “Europe” in many world media headlines.
Andrea Mammone is a historian of modern Europe at Royal Holloway, University of London. He has published extensively on the western European far right, modern Italy, transnationalism, and other themes on European society. His Transnational Neofascism in France and Italy (Cambridge University Press) came out in 2015. He is writing a short book on the recent turn towards nationalism and right-wing politics in Europe. He has also written for The Guardian, The New York Times, The Independent, Foreign Affairs, International Herald Tribune, Reuters, Al Jazeera, and New Statesman.
