PRAYERS, GREETINGS, BLESSINGS, SIGNALS, AND SONGS OF SICILIAN TUNA FISHERMEN”

Lecture by Giuseppina Colicci

This presentation discusses prayers, greetings, blessings, signals, and songs performed by Sicilian tuna fishermen during the fishing season. It is based on my fieldwork in Bonagia, a small town in the province of Trapani in western Sicily. In collecting this material I kept two questions in mind. Giuseppina Colicci received her Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at UCLA in 1996 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Palermo. She is currently teaching Italian language and culture at the SprachZentrum of the University of Tubingen, Germany, with an emphasis of the use of songs and Italian opera to learn Italian and working on a book on Sicilian sea songs with recordings kept at the Archivi di Etnomusicologia of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu
