Ferragosto On Film: Bid Deal on Madonna Street

Celebrate Ferragosto, one of the most popular holidays in Italy held on August 15, at the Institute with a special Italian Summer screening series dedicated to Italian comedies, including classic and contemporary films.

The second movie of the series is Mario Monicelli‘s I soliti ignoti (1958, 106 min). An inept crew of small-time thieves attempt to burgle a local pawn shop. An all-star cast (Vittorio Gassman, Marcello Mastroianni, Totò, Claudia Cardinale) and jazzy score highlight this charming comedy, a deft satire of classic caper films, that hilariously details the plight of a sad-sack group of bumbling thieves and their desperate attempts to pull off the perfect heist.

Winner of two Italian Nastro d’Argento award (Best Leading Actor / Gassman and Best Screenplay), Best Comedy at the 12th annual Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland and an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 31st Academy Awards.

New high-definition digital transfer and new and improved English subtitles.

In collaboration with Rialto Pictures
