Meet the Author Online: Nadia Terranova

Writer Nadia Terranova recounts her decision to remain in Rome during the quarantine instead of returning to her familial home in Messina. During this challenging period when life makes little sense Terranova finds comfort in poetry, quoting a verse by the German-Swedish writer Nelly Sachs who was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize Winner for Literature.

BEYOND THE DUST by Nelly Sachs
Hanging on the bush of despair
and yet waiting until the saga of blooming
comes into its divination -
suddenly the hawthorn beyond itself
from death found itself in life

Pendente dal cespo della disperazione
eppure in attesa che la leggenda dei fiori
avveri la sua profezia –
Esperto di magia
d’un tratto il biancospino fuori di sé
dalla morte s’è trovato nella vita

Terranova's award-winning novel Farewell, Ghosts is about a woman facing her past. The book introduced Terranova to English-speaking audiences and was translated by Ann Goldstein, translator of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan quartet. The novel was a finalist for the 2019 Premio Strega, winner of the Premio Alassio Centolibri and was selected as one of the Best Italian Books of 2018 by Corriere della Sera. She was born in Messina and currently lives in Rome.
